Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC) 2016 has just unveiled its line-up of renowned pop culture personalities — including highly sought after digital artist, Sakimichan!
Sakimichan began her journey as an artist at a tender age and gradually refined her skills in digital painting throughout the years. Her creations include digital paintings of characters from popular games, movies and shows such as Sailormoon, LoL (League of Legends) and Disney titles. She also enjoys painting fantasy inspired characters and giving them a brand new outlook.
Sakimichan takes a break from her hectic schedule to answer a few questions about her art, how she got started in the business, and some advice from the heart for fellow artists.
How did you get your start in the industry?
I got my first job as a junior concept artist at Bioware EA, I was picked up after college because my teacher believed in me and though I would be a good addition to the concept art team. I learned a lot from my senior concept artist there. I also worked in a mobile company called cloudcade, I did some of the illustrating work for their game “shop heros”. After that I decided to just do my own thing and freelance and participate in conventions because I love interacting with other artist and my fans in person.
Who are your major influences as an artist and illustrator?
I have many artists in mind, but I love visiting art station and deviant art for artistic influence. Though one artist I really looked up to even when I was in College was Jo-Chen. I just love her style and her male characters 😉
Among the characters you worked on with your popular fan art portraits, who was your favourite and why?
I really enjoyed painting my concept of male maleficent, I had a lot of fun painting male versions of well know Disney female leads/ side characters. I wanted to paint something for us ladies Maleficient had some really interesting elements that I thought would look awesome as a male and I had a lot of fun on his design.
What was the most surprising thing you experienced when working on your fan art portrait series?
I was surprised at the positive and supportive feedback 🙂 I also loved reading the suggestion and the encouragement, they always help motivate me when I paint something new.
If you could share one piece of advice with female artists who would like to break into the market, what would it be?
I feel, doesn’t matter if your male or female artist, in the industry as long as you have a good portfolio, have a good positive attitude and work hard, you will get there! Also talent is only 1%, the rest is all practice.
