Singapore is the first overseas location outside of Japan to host regular “AKB48 Theater”-style events, according to a 22nd April 2011 announcement by Togasaki Tomonobu — Theater Master for AKB48, and subsequently relayed by Anime Festival Asia on their FB fanpage.

The first concert is scheduled on 15th May 2011, with succeeding events to be held every two weeks after that. AKB48 will be joined by sister groups SKE48, NMB48, and SDN48 on several of this twice-monthly performances.

AKB48 has a massive following in Singapore and in neighboring South East Asian countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. The group has had two successful appearances in major pop culture events in Singapore — such as AFA X and STGCC 2010.
