Japan Sets New Twitter Record Thanks to Ghibli's La Puta

Via ANN:The classic Studio Ghibli film Laputa: Castle in the Sky was aired last 9th December on terrestial TV in Japan, and it triggered a Twitter phenomenon of epic proportions.

As the climactic scene played out and the spell to destroy the floating city of Laputa was uttered, millions of Japanese Twitter users played along and tweeted the spell — “balse”.

Twitter was bombarded by over 25,000 tweets per second and nearly caved under the onslaught, but managed to stay up. Not holding on though was the previous record of the most tweets sent per second: 8,000++ tweets, which was set when Beyonce announced her pregnancy.
