Found on Bleeding Cool and Nausicaa.net: Miyazaki Hayao said in a recent interview that he and several Ghibli bigwigs have decided on an exit strategy and close down the Studio if their next films do not do well in the box office.
Ghibli’s latest film is The Borrower Arrietty (借りぐらしのアリエッティ, Karigurashi no Arietti), based on the fantasy novel The Borrowers by Mary Norton. According to Miyazaki, the Studio will close down its film production arm and concentrate instead on managing merchandising and licensing rights on their existing titles.
On the flip side however, he said that if their next films do exceptionally well, he has plans to create a sequel for Porco Rosso — one of his most famous titles. The new Porco Rosso movie will be set well after the events of the first film, during the Spanish Civil War.
Porco Rosso (紅の豚, Kurenai no Buta) was the sixth anime film by Miyazaki, released in 1992. The story revolves around an Italian World War I ace pilot who was cursed with the face of a pig.

NUUUUUUUUUUU. That’s the saddest thing I’ve heard all day. :<

i’m not very optimistic since GEDO SENKI and ARIETTI both did middling business at the box office, compared to — say, SEN TO CHIHIRO and PONYO.

They’ve been hit or miss with their last few titles, but with a condition of a sequel to a classic… I smell PR pitch.

LOL i know how you feel. even PONYO — which was a massive hit, i felt just ambivalence towards. it paled in comparison to my favorites such as TOTORO, NAUSICAA, and SEN TO CHIHIRO.

THE BORROWERS did not earn as much as previous GHIBLI films, but i doubt it was such a loss that the studio will shut down…
