2010 J-Pop Anime Singing Contest

After the success of last years’s inagural event, The 2010 J-pop Anime Singing Competition is once again being organized by The Embassy of Japan and The Japan Foundation Manila.

Amateur groups composed of three to five members are invited to join (with the exemption of last year’s winners). These groups can be singing groups, bands, or groups composed of at least one vocalist and two back-up dancers.

Prospective contestants must submit a fully accomplished application form, a group photo and short write up, and a demo CD containing two Japanese songs performed by the group. For a complete list of rules, click here.

Applications can be sent in until 20th May 2010 to the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) Library, Embassy of Japan, 2627 Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City (MAP). Only ten groups will be selected for the final performance. The Grand Finals will be held on 24th July 2010 at Cyberzone, SM City North EDSA (Annex).

The J-Pop and Anime Singing Contest is presented by the Embassy of Japan in cooperation with the Japan Foundation Manila and in partnership with the SM Supermalls and SM Cyberzone.

This event is also brought to us by TOEI Philippines, Nihongo Center Foundation, Center for Pop Music, Yoshinoya, Animation International Licensing Philippines, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines, Inc., Ajinomoto, Canon, Heritage Hotel, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, and Yakult. HERO TV and MAX FM 103.5 are also on board as media partners.

hi! just wondering… is it maximum of 5 or 10? O_o
here, it says 10 but on the poster, it says 5… 😐
    i do hope it’s 10… 6 kasi kami…

Ohh level upped the sponsors! hehehe

So maybe the prize won’t be the free nihongo lessons… XD well free nihongo lessons are a steal already but something more would be sweeter for those who would join.

So again is it only limited to Anime songs? My friends were finalists and they changed their song because it was from a dorama rather than from an anime. I hope they won’t limit it like they did it the first time.

  3. but aren’t most drama themes songs by japanese pop acts anyway? they should be covered by the contest. anime themes were specified for inclusion because most of them are songs by voice actors and not pop stars so they fall a little outside of the “j-pop” label.

Yup, you’re right, prizes are no longer just nihongo lessons. hehe. The prizes from the event partners are sweeet. I also agree with rochelle san regarding the songs. Most songs from j-dorama hits are from j-pop.

    Oh is that so?

Yeah I agree with you rochelle but I asked my friends about it too and that was their explanation.

I think for last year they really wanted songs used in Anime either as OP ED or an insert. I guess the organizers were coming from the perspective that we do not recognized well enough jpop songs not featured in anime shows. Well yeah songs by seiyuu I think falls into the anime category as well.

hey! Is the choice of song limited to anime songs or can we sing a song from a game but with japanese lyrics?

Di ko sure kung sa last contest, merong full band na nag-perform/participate. I’d like to know if the organizers will provide the drums on set. Inaalala ko lang kasi, kung banda kami, uhmm.. hassle naman kung kami pa magdadala nung drums namin, etc? 😀 Thanks! 🙂

    1. @Sammie if the video game track was by a j-pop singer or group (as in: on the ORICON charts, has a record label, yadda yadda yadda…), it is included in the competition. otherwise, you’ll have to find alternatives.

@lilkittygirl actually, last year almost all of the contestants were bands. and yes, a drum kit will be provided.

I have a question:D we will perform as a girl group but… we don’t need a minus 1 for the first part? because we’re going to sing and dance so… do we need to record our voices only? with no background music? thanks

    1. based on some of the entries last year, you will have to secure a karaoke version of the song you will perform, and then record a version with your vocals overlaid over the original.

to dae: You can perform an acapella version of your number in the demo CD you will be submitting.

I hope one or two groups perform “glamorous sky” and pull it off this time around.

So what if Im half japanese, Im a vocalist from a band and we really want to join the contest. Am I restricted to join? 😀

    Like

  15. well, the rules clearly state that japanese members for the groups can only play support roles (musicians or back-up vocals) so that they do not have an unfair advantage over the language. but let’s wait and see what the JICC staff have to say about that 🙂

    To Yuki:
how proficient are you in Japanese? If you are very proficient in it, you will have an unfair advantage over the other participants, thus we will not allow you to be the main vocalist of your group.

what if a band would join? is required for the band to bring their own instrument at the event if ever they would be qualified at the grand finals or is it ok to join if a band would join in the 1st place?

    Like

    1. bands may join by playing their own instruments for the demo. if they manage to make it to the finals, a drum set and amps will be provided, but they will still have to bring their own guitars and keyboard.

hello po. tanong ko lang po kung yung issubmit ba na ‘cd demo’ ay recorded voice lang po ba o video dapat nung kanta ng group? thanks!

    Like

    1. the demo CD is a recording of you and your group singing the track you intend to compete at the finals with. this can be a karaoke version overlaid with your vocal track, or an acapella rendition of the song. remember, it has to be you singing in the recording and not the original japanese artist, otherwise your entry will be rendered void.

    Like

    1. the karaoke track is for singing groups; if you are in a band then of course your members are expected to play the song while the vocalist sings.

the a capella version is for songs where no existing karaoke version can be found. if a vocal group makes it to the finals, they may choose to sing a capella as well, or use a karaoke version if they manage to secure one in time for the finals.
