Popular Singapore anime and cosplay forum SGCafe was recently dragged into the spotlight, when a national newspaper highlighted an exposé thread about a groper preying on local cosplay lasses.
The alleged groper has forced several young ladies who cosplay at local anime events to sit on his lap, expose their midriffs for him to caress, as well as handle his privates. There are also reports of him sending unsolicited photographs of his genitals via e-mail to several lady cosplayers.
When confronted, the suspect denied any wrongdoing and claimed that “It was all in the name of fun.”. He was also directly quoted as saying that “They did not resist there and then. If they had, I would have stopped.”.
The sad thing about this is that I can actually see it happening here too >.> We’ve already heard far too many anecdotes of cosplay photogs taking upskirt shots, con attendees groping or pawing during photo ops, and fellow cosplayers forcing their unwanted romantic attentions on local lady cosplayers.
Honestly people keep them in your pants! Just because a girl is dressed skimpily does not mean she is asking for it. And for the love of all that is holy, no means no! She is not some girl in your favorite tentacle pr0n saying “Yamete, yamete!” for your pleasure. Gheezus >.>

Ugh! I just don’t know how much my temper’s going to last with these damned perverts. Taking advantage of those young cosplayers, just ’cause they’re teenagers. And there’s one type of pervert to watch out for: passive perverts.

@gab: IKR we are just a stone’s throw away from this happening in the local scene. i mean — i know it’s been happening already, but it hasn’t gotten bad enough for the local press to pick up on it.
@romeo: ugh passive aggressive troglodytes are the worst — they try to grope girls and when they’re caught, they say that they didn’t think they were doing anything wrong and that the girls should’ve said no in the first place >.>

That sucks. There should be guards at these events and they should know that stuff like this happens.
The sexism in our country still goes with the “She’s dressed like that, she’s asking for it” idea.

yeah, but the problem with getting security guards is sometimes they are overzealous in doing their jobs and ruin a lot of the fun of going to a con.

i think the most important thing right now is to let the the ladies know that it’s okay to say “no!”. from what i’ve observed (even from the local scene here in manila), many of them are reluctant to decline requests from photogs and fans who are a little too forward because they are afraid that they will be labeled “bitches” and become targets of online mockery and/or rage.

I’m actually at every cosplay event and have seen familiar faces present who are actually I can consider as maniacs or perverts. I often see these guys with a camera posing as a photographer or videographer.
I also have one footage of a guy actually trying to squeeze himself in between girls, probably trying to rub his private parts to a girls behind.

when i read this, 1st person i thought of is our local maniac-pedo-chanero photographer/cosplayer O_O for now, he just content with flirting with underage girls and being an a**, but who knows he might stoop to this level. not anymore the “maniacemperor” but the “maniacGOD”
