My roommate — the biggest Matsumoto Leiji fan I know (and incidentally Mikimoto Haruhiko as well), literally screamed her head off when I stumbled on to the YouTube link for the Space Battleship Yamato film starring SMAP’s Kimura Takuya.
The live-action adaptation of the epic space drama is reputed to cost around JPY 2B (or about USD 20M), which is a massive undertaking compared to the smaller budgets of other anime-to-film releases in Japan. With the cast and crew comprised mostly of the who’s who of Japanese film, I have my fingers crossed that this does not turn out to be a disappointment.
The film is slated for release on 1st December 2010, which give you guys a year — give or take a few weeks, to spazz out to your heart’s content. For a first taste of the new Yamato, head on over to YouTube for the 30-second trailer.

Still giddy from hearing the theme. Is now wondering how to get that kimura jacket off of him ๐

My fellow fans here are excited on the prospect of its release. We’re hoping that the production outfit is considering an internationally release even on a limited run to give fans outside of Japan a chance to watch it too. ๐ After this movie, it’s not hard to imagine a 1:1 scale Battle Ship Yamato being built in some future anniversary of the series. ๐
