Meiji University Opens Manga Library

Meiji University Yoshihiro Yonezawa Memorial Library of Manga and Subculture

Meiji University’s Surugadai campus has announced the opening of The Yoshihiro Yonezawa Memorial Library of Manga and Subculture over the previous weekend.

The library — which stocks thousands of issues of manga and entertainment magazines from the 1960’s to the present, was named after Yoshihiro Yonezawa, an eminent manga critic who passed away in 2006.

This opening is welcome news after the newly-elected Japanese Diet scrapped plans to build Japan’s largest anime and manga library. The library at Meiji University is poised to take over its role as the most extensive collection of products from Japan’s soft culture industry.

Meiji University first started putting together plans for the collection in 2005. Once the entire facility is completed in 2014, it will be renamed as The Tokyo International Manga Library, and will house 2 million individual items available for researchers and students interested in Japanese manga culture.

    Sigh, how lucky Japan is!
They get to put books about subcultures in their library yet in our own country we couldn’t even make to put extensive effort to give proper place to research materials, how much to our coveted komiks!

  4. i think the japanese are starting to see “soft culture” (their words, not mine) as a key export, and are taking steps to preserve current works as well as improve future output — similar to the quality controls they’ve implemented in their electronics and automobile industries, helping them become a post-war economic powerhouse.
