Via ANN: Manga author Toboso Yana posted an entry on her blog (Japanese only) with her opinions against illegally downloaded or streamed manga and videos of her most popular title Kuroshitsuji.
Toboso-sensei used very strong words in her post, going as far as saying that people who patronize these illegal methods of acquiring manga and anime were no better than “shoplifters” or “people who eat in restaurants and leave without paying the bill”.
Toboso-sensei went on to say that if this trend continued, manga authors, voice actors, and everybody else related to the industry would “slowly starve to death”.
The outburst was the direct result of Toboso-sensei receiving mail from Kuroshitsuji fans who let slip that they read the manga or viewed the anime via torrent downloads or from online video and “free” manga sites.
It was not mentioned in the post whether these e-mails were from Japanese or overseas fans.
Kuroshitsuji’s anime series is streamed legally online by Japanese online video giant Nico Nico Douga, and overseas licensee Funimation. Square Enix publishes the manga in Japan, while Yen Press distributes the English language version.
Thanks to Anne for the heads-up!

I’m betting this is from overseas fans, who are more affected by the closing of free manga sites. I’m not surprised that Toboso-sensei feels that way about it, and I definitely understand. What she said makes sense, since that’s how she and other people in the industry make a living.
I read manga online too, but mostly as a preview. If I like it, I’ll buy it. If not, well, I stop reading it.

Yana Toboso’s speech highlights a big problem that society has: instant gratification.
We’re not very patient people and I don’t think we’re taught how to appreciate certain things in life.
I posted my thoughts about this. You can read it at: http://www.mangatherapy.com/post/999357509/yana-toboso-society

personally, i think this is just another facet of the whole “us-versus-them” stance that both scanlation fans and manga publishers are guilty off.

I really love “Kuroshitsuji”,
and kinda read a few pages of the manga online,
to see if it’s really good.
I’m planning to order them now.
There’s a DVD release of the 1st season,
Japanese with English Subs (uh, right?^^)
So fans can just buy it.
I guess Toboso-sensei’s reaction was pretty normal.
I mean, I would kinda react the same if I was the Manga author .
But not to extreme extent. ^^;

although she used very strong words, toboso-sensei’s reaction is pretty understandable. what’s really messed up is the reaction by “fans” who say that because the author told them not to download the manga or anime illegally (which they most probably did), they said that they would stop being fans because the author was so “mean” and “nasty” to them >.>
