Five Questions with T-Tees

on

T-Tees is the newest offering from Atelier H_Matsumoto, Hazel Velas’ gothic and punk specialty store. T-Tees specializes in graphic and statement tees geared towards the geek and otaku communities. Hazel has been kind enough answer a few questions from magnetic-rose.net ๐Ÿ™‚

What was the inspiration for T-Tees? How did all of this get started? ๐Ÿ™‚

I always wanted to have my own clothing line like the one you see on gothic lolita and punk magazines from Japan. But then again, I don’t have formal lessons in sewing and it is a lot of work creating just one dress or outfit.

I decided to start on a T-shirt business because the supply of shirts are readily available. No need to sew and buy bulks of raw materials. I just have to think of a cool design that will fit my target market which are the anime, hobbies, and concert enthusiasts.

Two of my inspirations are: TomTees. He is the official t-shirt supplier of the band Sandwich and Pedicab. Team Manila because of their Pinoy inspired designs.

The name T-Tees was coined by Gary Lamanilao. The original name was supposed to be CommuniTEES but i thought it’s kinda boring and doesn’t have SHOCK factor so I decided to use T-TEES instead. =)

For you, what is the best thing about what you do?

The best thing about the business is when I see my customers happy and very satisfied once they purchase the t-shirt. I feel very appreciated when I see someone wearing the shirts I designed.

Which design or commission was your favorite? What were your most unusual requests?

My favorite design is the Paramore Concert Tee. I’m a big fan of the band. It was my first attempt to sell outside my fandom (anime community) and it sold very well. I also got the chance to meet new friends. Until now, I still have contacts with them even though the concert is over. They are the first supporters of T-Tees (doesn’t sound right?! LOL!).

What is the hardest part about the business? Have you dealt with any problems?

Hardest part is buying t-shirt supplies. I buy in bulk (100+) and it’s so hard for me transporting it.

What advice would you give to other graphic tee designers who want to start their own business?

If you want to start a T-Shirt business just to make easy money fast like many other schemes on the internet claim, then you’re looking at the wrong business. There is no such thing as easily making money fast and you’re always going to have to put in the effort to get the results you are looking for.

Things you need to consider before you setup or start your own T-Shirt business:

Have a winning concept – Having something unique to your shop will make you stand out, and keep customers coming.

Establish your market – This can be either the youth, couples, pregnant women, movie goers, or any group of people. Keep this market in mind as you go along with your business, and make sure you deliver what your market wants.

Find the cheapest prices without sacrificing quality – Opening a business means that you have to scout for raw materials and get them at the lowest prices. Bargain for the lowest prices, but never settle for less. Always keep your quality in mind but for low rates.

Market / Promote your shirts – Tell the world about your business, and you’ll be surprised how sales can go up.

Always have a goal, and make sure you reach it for the growth of your business. And then, good luck.
